What Is NIN

NIN means National Identification Number

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of number assigned to an individual upon successful enrollment. enrollment consists of the record of an individuals demographic data capture of the ten (10) fingerprints, head-to-shoulder facial picture and a digital signature, which are all used to cross-check existing data in the National Identification data base to confirm that there is no previous entry of the same data.

How To Be Eligible For NIN (National Identification Number)

It is mandatory/ compulsory for every Nigerian citizen and legal resident to enroll for NIN (National Identification Number). The process is the same whether you chose the self-service or you required an assisted service.

NOTE: Minor are not issued with the National Identity Cards until they attain the age of 16.

The commission in charge of NIN (National Identification Number) is National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Requirements For National Identification Number (NIN)

1: The original copy of the NIN slip issued to you after the first registration

2: The printout of the remittal retrieval reference (RRR) number given at the bank after payment/ or a printout stating the payment details if the payment was made online.

3: (i) Adult Age Modification Above the age of 16

An application letter duly signed by the applicant for change in the date of birth.
Applicant are to address the letter to the NIMC DG/CEO

(ii) Minor Age Modification below the age of 16

An application letter duly signed by the applicant’s parent for change in the date of birth s(he) wishes to modify for their child (ren) ward (s) stating the reason.

Applicant are to address the letter to the NIMC DG/CEO

4: Applicants are to present Supporting document to back the proposed changes to be submitted accordingly.

Applicant needs a document like court affidavit, proof of age, at least two (2) document showing your age (Like birth certificate, attestation of age, school certificate, SSCE Certificate etc), payment receipt.

Note: You are to attach the receipt via document.

Procedure For NIN Date Of Birth Modification

Step 1: Visit the enrollment centre with a supporting document listed above e.g court affidavit, proof of age, at least two (2) document showing your age, payment receipt etc.

Step 2: Data modification form will be issued to the applicant to fill

Step 3: Applicant data modification forms will be vetted by the NIMC official to cross check the information filled on the form against the supporting document provided.

NOTE: Applicants who can not read nor write should come along with a person who can do the form filling for them.

Step 4: Applicants pre-filled information will be Inputted on the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) software by a NMIC enrollment officer.

Step 5: The enrollment officer will ask the applicant (you) to double check his/her information using the applicant monitor to check the errors.

Step 6: If the applicant is satisfied with his/her demographic information, the biometrics of the applicant will be captured subsequently.

Step 7: After completing the enrollment, a transaction ID slip will be issued to the applicant as an evidence of the transection.

Step 8: The former National Identification Number (NIN) slip will be retained by the enrollment officer, if the modified data will affect details on the NIN slip

Step 9: The applicant will be requested to come back for the NIN slip within 2-5 working days or more, as it is subjected to speed of the network.

Step 10: A new National Identification Number slip having the same NIN will be issued to the applicant after processing.

NOTE: If the modification made affected the information on the applicants card, the following process will take place.

Here – A card replacement form will be filled and the old National (I.D) Identification card retrieved.

The New modified National e-I.D card will be issued to applicant within three (3) months after re-issuance of NIN slip.

NOTE: The service fee for date of birth correction in NIN is fifteen thousand naira (#15,000) remember it is non-refundable as you are to pay through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) into TSA (CBN).

Procedure For National Identification Number (NIN) Date Of Birth Correction Payment

Step 1. Visit www.remita.net to start the payment process

Step 2: Click Bills & Purchase

Step 3. Click on option ‘Pay Billers’

Step 4. Who do you want to pay – type in ‘National Identity Management Commission

Name or service/ purpose – chose modification of DOB or correction of Date of Birth.

Amount to pay – will be sent based on your choice in the step above.

Select Currency – Select your currency (Naira or dollar)

Payer’s Name – type your full name
Payer’s Phone – type your phone number
Payer Email Address – Type in Your email adress

Tick the ‘I am not a robot’ reCATCHA checkbox and click on the stated selected an images before clicking on the “Verify” button.

Step 5. Click on the “Submit” icon to proceed to payment. A new page which is the invoice (receipt) will come up which will display your (RRR) – Remita Retrieval Reference at the top of the page.

NOTE: Point out the invoice/receipt and and take note of the RRR.

How Long Does It Take To Change Date Of Birth On NIN

It takes about one (1) to two (2) weeks before they can make changes because the documents submitted will be reviewed/ investigated before changing the date of birth.
